Amélie sets

Over two days I visited a number of locations where the brilliant film Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain’), referred to sometimes as simply Amélie, was filmed, including having a drink in the cafe Amélie works in, which was magical!

I visited the cafe (Café des Deux Moulins), the grocery store, the carousel (Carrousel de Saint-Pierre), Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, the canal and a train station and photo booth.

Café des Deux Moulins (The Two Windmills)

Over twenty years on the Café des Deux Moulins, Amélie’s work place in the film, is still a cafe and retains much of the design we seen in the film. It was really surreal stepping into and spending time in the real life space viewed times in a film that is so close to my heart. I stayed for over an hour, enjoying the setting, a few drinks and writing postcards.

Grocery store and apartment

Next, the grocery store, run by M. Collignon in the film, and the square where Amélie’s apartment was. The store is located at 56 Rue des Trois Frères. A sign over the shop remains, stating “Maison Collignon fondée en 1956”.

In the film Amélie is noted as liking small pleasures, such as dipping her hand into sacks of grains, which we see her doing at the grocery store. While there were no sacks of grain, I did with buy some fruit from the outsides stands, like Amélie and others do.

Carrousel de Saint-Pierre & Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

The Carrousel de Saint-Pierre and the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur are pictured in the scene were Nico arrives to collect his photo album, and Amélie returns it, without meeting him, by sending him up to the telescopes near the Sacré-Cœur, and only when he is there, does she wave the photo album before placing it in his bike sactel. He rushed down to his bike, which is by the carousel, but she is gone.

The carousel is still there, still turning and still beautiful. I walked up to the Sacré-Cœur, visted inside, and had a go looking through a telescope at the top, as Nico did.

Canal Saint-Martin

Amélie skims stones, at the Canal Saint-Martin. Its a lovely strole to walk the length of the canal and stop at a cafe.

Gare de l’Est & a photobooth

Without the photobooths at Paris train stations, Amélie and Nico would not have met. I was excited to go to Gare de l’Est and take some Amélie-style photos. The machine are now modern, but fun none the less!
