EDS can impact the GI track in a number of ways, and affect food intake. I have a number of structural issues, due to the internal laxity which is symptomatic. Somehow, despite the issues, I have maintained my interest and love of food. I enjoy; understanding nutrition, cooking beloved and new recipes, savory and sweet and flavour and texture. This is not to underplay either my nor other’s struggle with managing EDS GI issues, which can be significant and difficult, both in practical, social and emotionally.
I am a self-professed foodie; who simply love of food; understanding nutrition, cooking beloved and new recipes, savory and sweet, flavour and texture. I love cooking and eating, making a mix of flavour and textues in meals and snacks. Both homemade and exploring cafe and restaurant menus are fantastic, when possible. I studied nutrition, after having a life long interest in nutrition and health.
Along with a previous long-term infection, GI presentations are my most significant EDS issue. In 2021 I found out that my stomach and colon were interally collaping (visceroptosis), due to internal tissue laxity. This is a structural issue, not a functional one. I also had a reduction of blood supply in an artery which feeds the intestines. Both structural and vascular issues were effecting both my upper and lower GI track. I had severe postprandial (post-eating) discomfort and pain, and my colon ‘was ‘loaded’, ie. not clearing, causing excess fullness and discomfort. Postprandial symptoms were concerning but also upsetting; being able to enjoy tasty food is one of my favorite things to do. I had to lie down/lie back after eating even a small meal.
I had upper and lower GI surgery in 2022, which included having my stomach, stitched (pexied) up to hold it in place. This element was a great success; instantly postprandial symptoms were greatly reduced. I was ordering food to the house on the drive home from the hosptial, 9 days after the surgery! I went from 57kg to 71kg (the most I have ever weighted) in the months after surgery.
While EDS can mean food can be tricky, I have managed to keep my joy for food.
