Older furniture has character, is beautiful, was made the last, and buying second hand is more sustainable; it doesnt add to additional mass manufacturing. Over the years I have sought out lovely pieces of furniture for a great price.
I have bought older, second-hand furniture for years. In my opinion, it is much better than buying new, for a few reasons. They have more personality and charm, were built to be durable, can be bought for a bargin price, and re-using these lovely pieces is more eco-friendly. From time to time I keep my eye on Gumtree or visit a second hand market.
Bureau
I saw this incredible bureau advertised, and knew from its beautiful design and its condition that it would be a good addition. When I went to collect it, the seller told me it has been in her family for years, but it was time for it to have a new home. Unlike many bureaus for sale; this one had the key to the drawers! It is practical and full of character. It was also only £20!

Chest
I had wanted a chest for a while, so when I spotted it, I knew it was coming home. At £99, I thought I got it for a fair price.
It has a secret compartment! Inside there are a few small drawers. If you remove one, you discover an additional, hidden, drawer! The photos below were taken just after getting it home. It now lives under the bedroom window, and holds my sentimental bits and pieces..

Mirror
This gold mirror sit along the fireplace, as seen above in the photos of the chest.
I thought, when I had moved in, that a mirror would look great there, and this was the perfect find. I travelled to Wimbledon in south west London, to collect it, for the very fair price of £50. The texture on the inner frame and the gold finish are lovely.
